Aunt Maude:
She was my mentor and definitely an inspiration. She taught me along with other family members, how to act and talk like a lady. While in the 5th grade, Maude taught me how to type. She gave me a Remington typewriter (which I still have), and a typing book to practice from. By the time I had typing in the 6th grade, I was way ahead of the class. If I didn't know the meaning of a word that was part of my homework, she would say, "Look it up". She encouraged me to take stenography and bookkeeping in High School. Maude was one of my aunts who made sure, since her mother was raising me and my brother, that we had school supplies, etc. Maude also took me to her place of employment various times. I wanted very much to be like her. She took me to visit her friends in Saratoga Springs where I saw cows for the first time. Maude let me play "dress up" as a child, putting on her furs and fox stole. As I became a teenager, Maude was instrumental in giving me advice on life issues, which I still remember to this day. For my Sweet 16 birthday, Maude purchased a pretty pink dress for me, and arranged a party assisted by her co-workers, who also brought their teens to the party. Maude was my disciplinarian. When I did something wrong, she would give a stern talking to. You better believe I listened!

I remember when Maude's fiancé, Joseph Barnes, proposed to Maude at a family gathering. He first asked her mother for permission to marry her, then got down on one knee and proposed to her. What a moment that was!

When my daughter was born, Maude was the one who purchased a bassinet along with necessary baby supplies, and for my son, as well. Needless to say, Maude was a very giving person.

Maude was a very special lady who made a huge impact on my life. I am comforted by the fact that I was able to tell her how much I appreciated her guidance. I will miss that smile and her saying, "Wait a minute, here's money for gas", even though I didn't need it.
Charlotte DeVeaux, Niece.
